Book gives tips on living long, healthy life

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The book "50 Simple Ways to Live a Longer Life" offers a concise collection of health tips, tackling issue like weight loss and stereotypes about aging, and promoting the importance of Vitamin D and keeping your legs strong to keep the rest of your body strong.

Such would describe "50 Simple Ways to Live a Longer Life," by Mill Valley couple Suzanne Bohan and Glenn Thompson. The co-authors, poster children themselves for good health and power careers, said the book's inspiration was born of their own keen interest in getting to the kernels of truth amid the barrage of anti-aging options out there. "We were frustrated with how much time it takes to pore through book after book to get health information," said Bohan, 46, a Bay Area correspondent for the Sacramento Bee and former ANG newspapers staff writer. Simple in format and spare of medical jargon or flowery language, the book has yielded some favorite health nuggets for Bohan and Thompson, 56, a 25-year attorney and Willow Street Wood-fired Pizza and Brewery restaurant chain co-owner. For example, studies this year revealed that vitamin D is surprisingly important in preventing chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes, Thompson said. The chief researcher on the topic, Dr. Michael Holick of Boston University Medical Center, believes that osteomalacia, a condition in which bones become softened by insufficient vitamin D, is frequently misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia. Strong legs are important because a lack of mobility can lead to many other debilitating health conditions, such as obesity, depression or heart disease. Following the chapter on tea, Thompson likes to drink five to seven cups of green or black tea daily - after his one morning cup of coffee. - Find the right fat: Dump hydrogenated fats, or trans fats, ease up on saturated fats and seek out healthful fats like omega-3s, and olive and canola oils. - Avoid breast cancer: Exercise and a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, folic acid and vitamin D are top lifestyle suggestions.
