Blueberries offer many health benefits
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Rich in vitamin C, potassium, iron, magnesium and antioxidants, blueberries can help prevent diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and cataracts, while promoting a healthy urinary tract, among other health benefits.
When George Traicoff operated a zoysia farm in DeSoto County, Miss., he repeatedly complained about the acidic soil to the county agent.
"I was in Princeton, driving along a country road, and I stopped at a stand and bought a bag of blueberries," he said.
And so Nesbit Blueberry Plantation was born.
Of course, Traicoff didn't know that 20 years later blueberries would be hailed as a miracle food.
Your taste buds will dance a jig when the berries pop in your mouth, but the rest of your body is going to thank you, too.
American Indians relied on the dried berries to provide vitamins and minerals during the winter and used syrups or teas for coughs and to ease the pain of childbirth.
Research indicates that a cup of blueberries a day can help prevent cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and such eye diseases as macular degeneration and cataracts.
Blueberries are grown in many regions of the world and have been cultivated commercially in cooler American climates for about a century, but as a crop they're fairly new to the South.
The University of Georgia started experimenting with rabbiteye varieties (so named because the berries turn pink when ripening) in 1925, and it stills turns out experimental bushes today; Traicoff has many rows of juvenile plants from the university that he's trying out.
But it was a historic event that led to commercial blueberry cultivation in Mississippi.
In medium saucepan combine honey, brown sugar, oil and cinnamon.
Spread and press mixture evenly in a lightly greased 9- by 9-inch pan.
