SARS outbreak creates health boom in Hong Kong

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

SARS, combined with new tax incentives for medical insurance, encouraged people to buy health coverage and improve their diet and exercise routines.

The booming Chinese economy and increased business growth in the Far East has prompted a leading European insurer to set up offices in Hong Kong to be on the doorstep of a new market. International Health Insurance (IHI) is known for its extensive no-quibble policies and cover for chronic conditions. The Copenhagen-based insurer claims to be in the vanguard of developing "wellbeing" services in the workplace by encouraging company staff to lead healthier lives. There is also emphasis on learning how to cope with stress, which is by far the greatest cause of prolonged absence through sickness in the UK. IHI has specialised in international medical plans for more than 30 years with services available in 190 countries. The outbreak of Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome) two years ago has made Hong Kong's population more health-conscious, prompting a boom in health insurance, according to Bupa International. Damien Marmion, the company's managing director in the former British colony, said worries over the potentially deadly infection, combined with new tax incentives for medical insurance, were encouraging people to buy cover. The insurer is offering advice on disease prevention, healthy eating, flu vaccinations and checks for heart problems and cancer.
