The first Alzheimer's Association International Conference on the Prevention of Dementia in Washington, D.C. released evidence that exercising, preventing gum disease, eating well, consuming fruit and vegetable juices and consuming alcohol in moderation can delay the onset of Alzheimer's, even in people whose parents were afflicted by the disease.
According to a new study even those people with a family history of Alzheimer's disease can do things to lessen their chances of contracting the deadly disease when they become older.
The steps people can take to delay or prevent the onset of dementia and other Alzheimer's symptoms were discussed Sunday at the first Alzheimer's Association International Conference on the Prevention of Dementia in Washington DC.
According to the conference, exercising, preventing gum disease, eating well, consuming fruit and vegetable juices and consuming alcohol in moderation can delay the onset of Alzheimer's even in people whose parents were afflicted by the disease.
Thee is a great concern regarding Alzheimer's.
Presently, approximately 5 million Americans suffer from the condition but that number is expected to rise dramatically as Baby Boomers become senior citizens.
In 15 years, the number of cases is expected to increase by as much as 70 percent.
The only surprise to the average person would be the helpful effects of fruit juice consumption.
Fruit juices contain polyphenols or flavonoids which act as antioxidants.
Another study discussed at the conference dealt with 109 pairs of twins.
The results showed that twins who suffered a stroke were six times more likely to develop dementia, those who had periodontal disease earlier in life were four times more likely, and those with lower levels of education were 1.6 times more likely.
So, eating right, keeping your mind and body active and drinking fruit juices may delay the onset of or diminish your chances of ever getting Alzheimer's disease.
It's definitely something for all people to keep in mind now to maintain their health later.
