Debit cards are good for everyday purchases, but credit cards are better online

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

When buying common goods such as groceries, people should use debit cards to pay for them. By taking money directly out of a bank account rather than putting the charges into a bill to be paid at the end of the month, the charges are much easier to take. However, credit cards are useful online, as the charges can be cancelled if the goods purchased do not arrive.

March 17, 2005 - Supermarkets are one of the places you're given the choice of using a debit card or credit. With a debit card, your money is immediately deducted from your account. Gail Hillebrand with Consumer Reports says it's better than a credit card when you're buying groceries and other routine purchases, "We recommend against using your credit card for everyday purchases, because many people don't have the discipline or ability to make that big payment at the end of the month." She says if you're shopping online, credit cards are a better choice, "You have a right to undo that charge if the goods never arrive or if what arrives is not what you ordered. You don't have that protection with your debit card, only with your credit card." There's another downside with debit cards because some banks charge fees to use them. If yours does, Consumer Reports says, find another bank or if you have the option sign for your debit card purchases. That's because banks are more likely to charge a fee when you use a pin number. One more advantage with credit cards is that many give you frequent flyer miles and other freebees, but only a few debit cards come with these kinds of bonuses.
