Expert recommends gardening to eliminate worry, weight and weeds

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Daily Press garden and home columnist Kathy Van Mullekom says, for her, a gym pales in comparison to gardening when it comes to relieving stress and exercising, and it's nice to have a beautiful patch of earth to show for your work.

Gardening is a productive way to get your body moving toward better health - whether you mow the yard, plant flowers or use a weed trimmer. After gardening, you have a beautiful lawn and flowers to show for all your hard work. In addition, gardening is also mentally and emotionally therapeutic, helping you maintain a little peace of mind and spirit. For others, the yard is a comforting getaway from never-ending e-mails and cell-phone calls. "Everyone has different emotional experiences with their surroundings and we all have connections that matter to us, such as the smell of a familiar flower that reminds us of our childhood," says Wydra, author of "Feng Shui in the Garden." "Decide what areas of your life you want to affect and then use your yard as the canvas," she says. "Most people are concerned about three things: health, relationships and wealth, and by wealth I mean having a good feeling about life." To help you personalize your outdoor space, Wydra teams with Briggs and Stratton, the makers of engines for home and gardening equipment, to create the "Comfort Zone Planner." It shows you how to use plantings, colors, shapes and other elements to design six different types of comfort zones. Create a child's garden and involve children in planting things they can eat like wild strawberries and flowers they can pick such as pansies, snapdragons and daisies. Expand living space by creating an outdoor "room" for entertaining. Vibrant flowers in pots and garden borders will energize guests. An inviting path might lead to a rock, small water garden, sundial, or a circle of abundance as a focal point for meditation.
