New device helps Alzheimer's memory

A new device has recently been shown to have positive results in stimulating the memory of Alzheimer's patients. The Computer Interactive Reminiscence and Conversation Aid (CIRCA) works by playing songs and displaying pictures and movie clips from the past when chosen from a touch-screen menu. The idea is that since Alzheimer's patients have more difficulty recalling short-term memory, it would be good to shift their efforts at recalling long-term memories. Dr. Arlene Astell of St. Andrew's University was a member of the team that developed CIRCA. She commented, "CIRCA exploits the fact that, while dementia sufferers find it hard to recall recent events, longer-term memory is less affected by their condition." Traditionally, it has been the responsibility of the caregiver to help the patient recall memories that could spark conversation. CIRCA is unique in that it allows the patient to choose certain media that could trigger a memory they would like to discuss. Such media is usually selected from the era between 1930 and 1960; times the patients are most likely to remember. The research team noted that personal pictures can be added, but are not advised, as they could upset both the patient and caregiver.
