Malaysia a mecca of medical tourism

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Among other attractions, the modern medical facilities and competitive medical fees in Malaysia are two vital factors that make the country a popular destination for health tourists, since a heart bypass surgery using up-to-date technology and methods costs 14 times less than the same treatment in the U.S.

Highlighting Malaysia's tourist attractions, visiting Tourism Minister Datuk Dr Leo Michael Toyad has described Malaysia as "Southeast Asia's gem" before a gathering of the US travel trade and media at New York's top address, the St Regis Hotel. "The objective of my mission is to renew the country's commitment and support to the travel trade in the United States and Canada to promote Malaysia as a tourist destination," he said at the function today (Friday). "Previously known as the `Silver Haired Programme' when first launched in 1987, the `My Second Home' programme allows foreigners to live in Malaysia with a social visit pass for five years," he said. Tourism Malaysia is also aggressively promoting marine tourism, such as cruising on ships plying from Yangon (Myanmar) through Malaysia to Manila Bay (the Philippines). "Malaysia is also ideally suited for US citizens wanting to spend their honeymoon, anniversary and other milestones in their private lives. Toyad told Bernama that he would be holding a round-table discussion in Los Angeles, the last leg of his tour, with film-making companies and producers to promote Malaysia as a film-making destination. I would like to make a strong pitch with Bollywood film-makers to utilise the facilities available in Malaysia for film shooting," he said. Malkit Singh, the New York-based vice president (eastern region) of Malaysia Airlines, told the audience that they could not get a better air fare than that offered by Malaysia Airlines. Nazleen Noor, a budding Malaysian fashion designer who uses batik as the base fabric, wrapped up the evening with a dazzling display of her batik-based fashion clothes. Nazleen has received several awards, including the Asian Young Fashion Designer Award (2000) and the Malaysia International Fashion Award (2003).
