Town considers harnessing wind power for energy needs
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that the town of Lloyd is applying for a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to build wind turbines to harness the near-constant wind that blows through the Hudson Valley, thereby lowering their energy bills.
The Town of Lloyd is seeking to harness some wind power along the Illinois Mountain ridge line.
The town is preparing to seek a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to lower its energy bills by using the natural currents that blow through the Hudson Valley.
"Everybody I've talked to who climbs the tower said the wind never stops," said John Jankiewicz, Lloyd's water and sewer administrator.
That radio tower is situated atop the 1,100-foot mountain, and the town's reservoir system and water plant are located below the ridge line.
The town is looking for companies that could provide the needed wind turbine technology for the plan.
"We have to find what kind of wind patterns we have there," Supervisor Bob Shepard said.
If the town finds suitable companies, it could spend up to $3,500 for a feasibility study and then possibly seek a $50,000 matching grant from the state research and development authority to purchase the technology.
As the heat takes its toll on the region, reservoir supplies for the water plant are harder to come by, so the town must pump water from the river before it is treated from consumption.
Any electricity gained from a mountain-top wind turbine could be applied to running the water and sewer plants.
Finding ways to save money for its water and sewer operations has been an ongoing effort in Lloyd.
Nearby, the towns of Rosendale and New Paltz are using alternative energy sources.
Geothermal power is being used to heat and to cool the Rosendale community center, and the Town of New Paltz buys wind power from an upstate wind-power farm for the electricity it uses in its offices and other facilities.
