Foreign car rentals restrict elderly drivers

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Ireland, Morocco, New Caledonia, Egypt, Gibraltar, Kenya, Malta, New Guinea and Tasmania all have upper age restrictions on car rentals. People over 80, and in some cases even people over 65, are restricted from driving.

MOST people may never need to know this, but if you were to rent a car in Morocco or New Caledonia, you better not be 65 or over years old. That's because in those countries - unlike the United States - many rental car companies have upper age limits. My father rented a car over the Internet through Alamo. But when we arrived at the Dublin airport, the local rental car agency working with Alamo asked his age. There are questions of varying costs, of insurance, and of customs and legislation, particularly internationally, which may come as an unwelcome surprise. For example, while those renting cars in the United States don't have to worry about being too old, drivers under age 25 cannot rent a car at all in most states. New York and Michigan are the exceptions, allowing those 18 and older to rent, but most rental companies tack on an additional fee to compensate for the higher liability risk, said Richard Broome, a spokesman for Hertz Rental Cars. In terms of prices, one thing is certain: the number of car rentals starts climbing around the July 4th weekend and continues through August, so, not surprisingly, that is when rates start going up. In mid-June, for example, the average cost of a midsize car booked a week in advance is $43 daily from an airport location, according to the Abrams Consulting Group, an industry research firm. Over the last six months, the rate has been as low as $35 a day, said Neil Abrams, president of the firm. The report found that an economy car booked through Hertz at a downtown Boston location was $210 for the first week in May, including taxes and fees.
