The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University will release a 214-page report of an exhaustive three-year study showing enormous increases in the abuse of controlled prescriptions drugs at a press conference on Thursday, July 7, 2005, 11 a.m. EDT in the Murrow Room at the National Press Club, 529 14th Street N.W., 13th Floor, Washington, D.C. Joseph A. Califano, Jr., CASA chairman and president and former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare will present the findings of the report entitled, Under the Counter: The Diversion and Abuse of Controlled Prescription Drugs in the U.S. Bo Dietl, president of Beau Dietl & Associates, will describe an investigation his firm conducted on the availability of these drugs (opioids, depressants, stimulants and steroids) on the Internet.
The CASA report covers:
• Increases in controlled prescription drug abuse among the general
population and greater increase among teens.
• Increases in steroid abuse among girls and boys.
• Controlled prescription drug involvement in emergency room deaths.
• Increase of controlled prescription drug abuse compared to abuse of
illicit drugs.
• Americans' abuse of controlled prescription drugs vs. the combined
number who abuse cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants and heroin.
• Availability of controlled prescriptions drugs on the Internet.
• Results of unprecedented national surveys of physicians and
pharmacists.
