Residents purchase home security systems in response to skyrocketing crime rates

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The Newark, New Jersey area has seen a 300% increase in home security equipment after the crime rate rose. Pepper sprays are selling fast for people who are uncomfortable with guns. The police are also recommending "installing alarms and having dogs in your residence for protection". Nonetheless, simpler steps like cutting your hedges and dead bolting your door increases your level of protection tremendously.

The rash of home invasions in the greater Newark area has boosted business at Rocco Curro's hardware store. Deadbolts, window locks, floodlights and motion detectors have sailed off shelves at his Scott True Value store in the Park and Shop Center on Elkton Road. Nearby neighborhoods have seen the worst string of burglaries that Curro can recall in his 15 years of business there. A task force of Newark, New Castle County, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Cecil County and University of Delaware police came together last week to investigate nearly 100 burglaries and nine home invasions since October. Local business owners said residents are buying supplies and learning more about self-defense. Bob Miller, co-owner of Miller's Gun Center in New Castle, said more people have called to ask about guns, not necessarily to buy them. Pepper sprays are selling fast, he said, adding that it's a good idea for someone uncomfortable with owning a gun. Ideas ranged from installing outdoor lighting to engraving and photographing valuables, "pinning" windows with nails, installing an alarm system or adopting a dog. "Alarms and dogs are a great deterrent," Newark police Cpl. Tracy Simpson said, adding that none of the home invasion burglaries occurred where there were either alarms or dogs. Ben McCormick asked Simpson if he could use deadly force if a burglar breached the bolted bedroom door. "There will be an investigation if there is somebody dead in your bedroom," she said. Home security businesses also have seen more inquiries. Wilson said customers still should take other measures like trimming hedges, adding deadbolts and installing floodlights.
