A study performed by Visa reports that 20% of the population has suffered from credit card fraud at one time or another. However, along with this stunning number, the report also says that people are aware of credit card security. The report was released to coincide with Visa's publicity campaign to make people aware of a new "chip and pin" purchase method where people punch in a PIN to verify their purchases instead of signing a sales slip

Almost one in five people have been the victims of credit card fraud, according to a survey published today. The Visa study found that the vast majority of shoppers were security conscious. The company is today beginning a publicity campaign to raise awareness of 'chip and pin technology', where consumers have to punch a number into a keypad to verify a credit card transactions instead of signing a slip of paper. Half of Irish credit card holders have new chip and pin codes. The technology is designed to ensure consumers are less vulnerable to fraud. New terminals which read the credit cards are being rolled out in shops and restaurants around the country. The new cards have a high-tech chip which matches with a four-digit pin code.
