WPRI in Rhode Island reports that Mayor Tom Menino announced a plan to close the apparent gap in the level of health care received by blacks and whites by tracking differences in care by race and ethnicity, collaborating with religious groups and community coalitions in minority neighborhoods and improving cultural awareness in healthcare professionals.
BOSTON The health care black residents receive in Boston versus whites will be discussed today as Mayor Tom Menino announces a plan to close the gap in health status between the races.
The city's campaign calls on hospitals to diversify work forces and improve cultural awareness of medical workers.
It also calls for collaboration with religious groups and community coalitions that work in black, Hispanic and Asian communities.
The city also will help pay for hospitals to begin tracking differences in care by race and ethnicity.
The campaign is expected to cost about a (m) million dollars, and will be partially underwritten by grants from foundations, health care providers and the city.
Menino's announcement is scheduled for 10 a-m in Roxbury.
