Weaning the U.S. economy away from its dependence on foreign oil is not going to be an easy task. Last week, the U.S. Senate approved a broad expansion of the use of ethanol in gasoline, despite claims it most likely will increase gasoline prices outside the heavily agriculture region of the country. The provision requires refineries across the country to use a total of eight billion gallons of ethanol a year beginning in 2012. Our region would like to see alternative fuels developed from crops as a way to enhance our economy. However, such a mandate could produce hardships on states that don't have such an agriculture-based economy. These kinds of measures come in the wake of the growing realization in Congress the time has come to develop some kind of national energy plan to meet the growing demand for fuel, while keeping prices in check as much as possible. Dianne Feinstein, of California, claims doubling ethanol use would result in lost revenue for the government because ethanol receives a 51 cents-a-gallon tax credit. If the U nited States is really serious about decreasing the dependence on foreign oil, we're going to have to invest more in renewable energy sources, such as ethanol and wind. Our political leaders are going to have to be willing to make some tough decisions. And, this is also one of those issues politicians can't walk away from once they've voted. Just as it has taken years for the United States to become so dependent on foreign oil, it will take years to develop alternative sources and alternative uses of fuel. This is a crucial time for the United States to take a stand on energy and lead the nation in an improved direction as far as its energy policies.
