The necessity of recycling for a better future
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
This article in The Islander gives a comprehensive look at recycling, its history and timely imperative in the world today.
Producing waste is a little bit like breathing.
People rarely think about the action of breathing, let alone what quality of air enters and exits our lungs.
Just for a moment, think about the items you recently brought home from shopping.
How much packaging did you inadvertently buy with your products and how long were the products or the packaging actually used for?
Now reflect on what proportion of these items went into the rubbish bin.
Early European settlers produced only a little more waste as many items were re-used or repaired and food scraps were fed to chooks, dogs or their pigs.
Packaging within packaging for the prevention of sabotage and legal protection has been common place since the 90's and these days it's often cheaper to buy a new item rather than get the old one fixed.
With growing concern about the environment and the lack of landfill space in Australia, recycling, just one way to minimise waste, is a necessity, not just an option.
Though a household collection for recyclables is not yet available on the Island, Kangaroo Island Council is currently working towards this much needed service.
While recycling services are in developmental stages, Council have made substantial positive changes at the Kingscote Waste Depot to make a turn around in the way Kangaroo Island deals with its waste.
Paper, cardboard and plastic delivered to the Kingscote waste depot or Penneshaw / Parndana Transfer stations are being baled and then recycled at Amcor.
Council has waived the delivery fee for household waste and recycling that is brought to the waste depot and transfer stations by residents who sort out their household items into appropriate categories.
PET plastics such as soft drink bottles are 100pc recyclable and are very commonly turned into polar fleece clothing, carpets and created back into PET bottles!
