SilverBox in Malaysia makes recycling easy

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Citizens in Kuala Lumpur are taking advantage of the "SilverBox" recycling program that puts units on the city streets to facilitate environmentally friendly disposal.

CITY folk are making good use of the "SilverBox" recycling and advertising units placed along the busy streets in Kuala Lumpur. OMG Media (M) Sdn Bhd, which has the sole rights to the advertising medium in Malaysia, said response towards the units had been good and more people now knew how to use the recycling units properly. "People are using the units well as we see recyclables like aluminium cans and paper and plastic items being disposed of in the proper compartments," said its chief executive officer Devsonia Singh Dhaliwal. Each SilverBox unit comes with three clearly marked compartments -- paper, aluminium and pastic, glass -- to enable passers-by to dispose of the recyclables correctly. The sleek, chic stainless steel units with advertisements pasted on them were launched in Jalan Bukit Bintang in August 2003. Apart from being recycling bins, the 1.56m-high by 1.6m-wide SilverBox units are an advertising tool and a medium to get the recycling message across to the public. OMG Media operations manager Baldeep Singh said the public was aware that the recycling units were not for bulk waste. He said there was hardly any vandalism and in the most extreme case vandals only peeled off the advertising stickers on the units. "A private contractor collects the recyclables from the bins twice a week before selling them to other parties. No client (advertiser) would like to see dirty units as they want to maintain a good image. To date, no clients have complained about the units' cleanliness," he said. Devsonia Singh said OMG Media generated RM1.2mil in revenue last year. After two years, 130 SilverBox units had been placed in the city with several others in churches in Sentul and Kajang and a college in Petaling Jaya.
