Piedmont Farmers Market draws throngs of food-loving patrons

A Farmers Market in Kannapolis, NC totes not only produce but also with sweet-smelling breads, custard pies and handmade soaps and candles sealed in glass jars, drawing a number of food lovers and community members to the Saturday morning fellowship.
Charlie Dillard, 40, of Concord browsed through rows of yellow onions, red strawberries and layered cakes recently at Piedmont Farmers Market in Kannapolis before settling on a green watermelon.
Shortly before 8 a.m., vendors stacked tables not only with produce but also with sweet-smelling breads, custard pies and handmade soaps and candles sealed in glass jars.
Johnny Greene, a Union County farmer, said he's sold his vegetables at the market for several years now.
On this particular Saturday, he had palm-size red and white potatoes, cucumbers, cabbage and squash to sell.
We're like a big family," Greene said, carrying armfuls of green cabbage from his white truck to his booth.
Regular customers said they come to chat with friends about the fresh produce.
"This started as a hobby because I just loved to cook," Dixon said, resting her soft face on her small palms.
Dixon said she kept returning to sell her sourdough bread, chocolate and egg custard pies and round pineapple cakes, each wrapped in a clear plastic bag.
Dixon said her husband, Wade, 75, usually helps her sell their baked goods at the market, but he's recovering from heart and lung surgery and has emphysema.
"I don't go by a recipe, because you can change it around and make it better than the recipe," Dixon said with a bright smile, making a slow stirring motion with her wrist.
"I'm proud of everything we grow," Kimball said, interrupting his chat with Joan Zimmerman of Concord, who asked about his selection of cantaloupe.
