Doctor says India is ahead of America and Europe in minimally invasive heart surgery

Dr. Naresh Trehan told the India Post that it is harder for other countries to get recognized over America when it comes to medical advances, but that India is ahead of both the United States and Europe in the field of minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
Passing on the baton of the presidentship of the prestigious International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS) at its 8th annual scientific meeting at New York's Marriott Marquis June 1-4, he lauded the courage of the essentially American organization to have nominated its first non-American, non-European member as President when they elected him a year ago.
Founder of the internationally renowned Escorts Heart Institute and Research Center (EHIRC) in New Delhi -- the largest of its kind in the world -- Dr. Trehan has done pioneering work in robotic and 'beating' heart surgeries in India, which has far surpassed what the West has done in the field of minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
"Having lived here (the US) for 20 years, I know, to get equal recognition we have to be 150 percent better than our counterparts in America.
Among other things, he discussed the state of medical facilities in India today, medical insurance for the poor in India and the growth of medical tourism in India.
Dr. Trehan: In India, with one billion people, they still don't get many services.
