Health expert: Regulated doses of sunshine healthy for all

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Exposure to sunshine stimulates vitamin D production in the body, says Dr. Tedd Mitchell in his article for USA Weekend, and vitamin D can help ward off cancers, but the secret is to find a way to control sun exposure to keep it at safe levels.

For decades, doctors (including me) have warned patients about the detrimental effects of sunlight on their skin, but now that seems to be changing. Here's what we know for sure: Our dilemma: Vitamin D is vital for long-term health and may be a key player in reducing cancer risk. Sunlight is a great source of vitamin D, yet it can lead to skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer, occurs as a result of exposure to sunlight over the course of decades. We also know that squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common form of skin cancer, is associated with chronic sun exposure. And we know high-intensity burns (several really bad sunburns at various times) raise the risk of melanoma. Our skin produces a lot of vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. In fact, that is one of the most effective ways to get vitamin D into the system. Vitamin D may protect against cancer, including lymphomas and colon, prostate, lung and even skin cancer. Information suggesting that a little sunlight is good for you might predispose millions of Americans to forgo the sunscreen. In general, it still makes sense to protect your skin, avoid sunlight in the middle of the day (when it's at its most intense), and use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors for long periods. However, for shorter (15-minute) outdoor excursions, it may be worthwhile to let the sun do its thing for your health!
