New Jersey health clubs combine wellness regimens under one roof
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Although it occurred to them at different times, for different reasons, both James Napolitano and Joe DeGise felt that people shouldn't have to travel to different clubs for exercise, massage, yoga, acupuncture and nutritional counseling, so they combined the regimens under one roof, reports North Jersey Media Group.
The idea came to James Napolitano years after his father died of a degenerative muscle disease.
"We were going all over the place to chiropractors, doctors, massage therapists, acupuncturists.
"I realized I'd be saying, 'Here's what you need to do: Go exercise, go have proper nutrition, go see the yoga instructor - and by the way, there's a chiropractor up the street.
Separately, these two men hit on a concept that signals the wave of the future: a center that incorporates coached workouts with modalities such as massage, yoga, acupuncture and nutritional counseling.
"I see the gym moving in the 21st century to offering multiple approaches to health," says DeGise, whose Proactive Wellness Center opened in Westwood a year ago.
THE 'WELLNESS CENTER' CONCEPT: Wellness centers differ from gyms and spas because they offer integrated "whole body" services under one roof and one management.
Howland said full-service clubs cater to all ages rather than the 20- to 30-something die-hard fitness enthusiasts you'll see at a Gold's Gym or the middle-aged women most likely to patronize Curves.
Some of the larger all-in-one centers, such as Health Quest in Flemington, offer swimming, martial arts and sports leagues along with nutritional counseling and skin care.
"With most gyms you pay a membership and then pay additional for those kinds of classes.
DeGise also believes that an integrated program of exercise, nutrition, relaxation and chiropractic care can be achieved in under two hours per visit.
But because wellness emphasizes prevention over treatment, he expects clients to follow through at home and get regular medical checkups, too.
"Our clients are mostly between 35 and 60, mostly female, and lots of kids," says Joe DeGise of Proactive Wellness Center in Westwood.
