Bill passed to keep Illinois residents in the know about outpatient procedures

On their website, KWOC TV 6 reports Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich has signed into law a bill which will allow the Department of Public Health to post information, such as average outpatient procedure costs and commonality, on its web site, thereby helping Illinois residents make educated decisions about health care.

Governor Rod Blagojevich (bluh-GOY'-uh-vitch) today signed a law that gives Illinoisans more access to information about outpatient medical care. The legislation allows the Department of Public Health to post information on its Web site, including the average cost for some procedures at outpatient centers and how often they are performed there. Blagojevich says the information could help patients make better decisions about health care. The department has been allowed since 2003 to post similar information about inpatient services, but those efforts stalled because of unclear guidelines and a lack of money. Agency spokeswoman Tammy Leonard says the inpatient and outpatient information should be available on the Web site by next spring.
