Most online Canadian pharmacies are actually in the United States, study finds

InformationWeek reports that a recent study by an internet research group found that many of the online pharmacies that claim to be in Canada are actually based in the United States.
Most online pharmacies purporting to be Canadian are not located in Canada and many are located in the U.S., according to a new report prepared for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The results of the survey prompted the president of the Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA) to call for the phony sites to be shut down.
The online survey was prepared for the FDA by Cyveillance, an online risk monitoring and management firm, and partially released Monday.
It examined some 11,000 online pharmacy sites claiming to be Canada-based and found that just 1,009 actually sold prescription drugs and only 214 of those seemed to have Canadian origins.
The phenomenon of U.S. states and municipalities purchasing drugs from Canada is growing, as more consumers have trouble paying for medications that are often double in price in the U.S. "The trend is growing," said Troszok, who is based in Calgary.
There are 45 million uninsured Americans and up to 100 million underinsured Americans."
The report suggested that the FDA should assess the online sites purporting to be Canadian and that offer medications at a discount.
Troszok said he hopes the report won't cause worry among U.S. consumers considering purchasing drugs from Canadian firms.
He noted that the some 30 members of the CIPA all require prescription from a physician before pharmaceuticals will be shipped.
Troszok is the owner of the Extended Care Pharmacy, a mail order pharmaceutical fulfillment firm.
Troszok complained of on-going "fear-mongering" from U.S. pharmaceutical companies who want to restrict sales of medications through legitimate Canadian channels.
The majority of the Canadian companies' business comes from customers in the U.S., but Japan and Europe could represent emerging markets, too, he added.
