Mammograms less effective if administered by physicians with little experience
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
According to My DNA, researchers have found physicians who perform less than 780 mammograms each year are 30 percent less likely to discover breast cancer than doctors who conduct a higher number of examinations.
Breast cancer patients who see a doctor that specializes in mammograms have their chances of early detection increase from 29 to 97 percent.
Early detection is vital toward proper treatment of breast cancer, as it allows treatment options that are more reliable and less dangerous.
Unfortunately, in findings presented at the Department of Defense breast cancer meeting in Philadelphia, researchers found a large diagnosis variability between doctors who were experienced in the mammography field, and those who perform less than 780 mammograms each year.
The less experienced group was found to be 30 percent less likely to discover breast cancer than higher volume physicians.
The findings showed that doctors performing from 2,500 to 4,000 mammograms each year are the most precise in their breast cancer diagnosis.
Their accuracy was measured through early detections as well as rates of false positives in their diagnoses--the frequency in which a doctor falsely detects breast cancer when no such cancer exists.
Dr. Philip Chu, radiology specialist at the University of California Berkeley, contends that lower counts of false positives keeps a woman's mind at ease during the mammogram.
"Fewer false positives mean less anxiety for women and less expense through fewer unnecessary tests."
