Schools resist state candy and soda crackdowns

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The Express Times reports that Pennsylvania school officials are not thrilled about the prospect of conforming to the crackdown on candy and soft drinks which New Jersey will impose on its own schools by September, as they feel such a move will erode local government.

New Jersey's crackdown on candy and soda in schools is being viewed incredulously by school officials on both sides of the Delaware River. Beginning Sept. 1, 2007, New Jersey schools must stop serving foods high in sugar and fat and must ration whole milk. Pennsylvania school officials say they are not wild about creating laws and regulations to fight childhood obesity. Such laws erode local government, said Rich Siegfried, a school board member in the Easton Area School District. "Eventually, it's going to be 'what's the point of having the local level,' " Siegfried said. Still, the school district is concerned about nutrition and has been working on providing healthier products to students, said district Superintendent Dennis Riker. Riker said one way the school district is tackling the issue is by making healthier food cost less than other foods. "We've found this to be an excellent model," he said. As for soda, the school district has contracts with Coca-Cola and Pepsi Co. for the next four years, and it has a contract exclusively with Coca-Cola after 2009, Riker said. The school district earns a commission with each soda sale and Coca-Cola provides money directly to the school district, Riker said.
