Exercise and nutrition education help kids avoid obesity and disease, study says
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
The Journal of Pediatrics conducted a 14-week study that followed 400 minority children in 12 Head Start programs in Chicago, and found that those who participated in an intensive program that taught proper eating and exercise habits stayed healthier and avoided obesity better than those who did not participate in the program. The study taught nearly 200 four-year-olds how to make healthy food choices by using interactive puppets named Miss Grain and Mr. Fat, and through letting the children role-play the parts of zoo animals during three 20-minute learning sessions per week. The study's results will hopefully help curb obesity, which can lead to diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.
Nutrition and Exercise Lessons Help Kids keep Fit A study published in The Journal of Pediatrics that followed 400 minority children in 12 Head Start programs in Chicago, found that those who participated in a 14-week, intensive program, improved their eating and exercise habits and were better able to grow while keeping obesity at bay than children who didn't participate in the program.
The study --which included the interaction of children with puppets named Miss Grain or Mr. Fat, and role playing pretending to be zoo animals-- provided them with the tools on healthy eating and exercise that helped the kids change their habits.
"We were successful in taking the children off their trajectory toward overweight," said Melinda R. Stolley, co-author of the study, in the May issue of The Journal of Pediatrics.
"We showed that you can indeed intervene at this age to change behavior of children over the long term," she said.
This proves that you can influence your children eating and physical activity behavior early enough to keep them fit and avoid obesity in the future, as well as the development of conditions like diabetes, hypertension or heart disease.
