Spiritual leader Deepak Chopra lectures about Ayurveda and the mind-body connection

Deepak Chopra, now 58, began his professional career as an endocrinologist in India. After moving to the U.S., he lectured at Tufts and Boston University, and became chief of staff at New England Memorial Hospital. In 1985, he began to develop an interest in holistic health, and the mind-body connection. Among other things, he is recognized for bringing Ayurveda to the public sphere, and has written over 30 books on this and other subjects.
Each year, thousands of people read the latest offerings from New Age spiritual leader Deepak Chopra, the author of more than 30 books.
Now Tallahasseeans will get to hear him in person at a lecture Wednesday.
He recently spoke with the Democrat from his home in California.
Chopra, 58, was trained as an endocrinologist in his homeland of India.
Today he is recognized for popularizing Ayurveda, India's ancient system of natural healing, and is widely known for his writings about the mind-body connection.
Still, he thinks of himself as a doctor.

"It was a huge turning point," he said of losing his father.
In the autumn of his life, he says, "My passion is really exploring consciousness as a domain of awareness that has infinite possibilities."
For Chopra, that means getting involved in "spiritual cinema" or entertainment that raises consciousness.
He is writing a script for a movie "Buddha," which is about the life of Siddhartha Gautama, the religious philosopher and teacher who founded Buddhism in about 500 B.C.
He is also producing a movie "Soulmate," based on a novel he wrote that deals with a "love that transcends death."
Chopra is energized by the new projects and still enjoys writing and touring around the world to talk about his work.
