Universal Electronics unveils $800 universal remote for the whole town

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The average universal remote can control the television, VCR, DVD player and the receiver, but the Orange County Register reports Universal Electronics Inc.'s new Nevo remote will be able to control an entire house's computer controlled systems for a mere $800.

An $800 remote control isn't for everyone. But as more digital devices infiltrate the home, the smart Nevo SL may be the only thing that makes sense of it all. The remote, which went on sale Monday from Universal Electronics Inc. in Cypress, is not your typical universal remote that handles the usual TV, DVD player and stereo. We're doing the same in the (network) space," said Rob Lilleness, president of Universal Electronics, which developed one-remote- fits-all technology to eliminate multiple controllers cluttering up a living room. Tomorrow, this palm-sized device may control the thermostat, home-security system, kitchen appliances, a car's computer system and other devices built on a burgeoning technology called Universal Plug and Play, or UPnP. One growing use of UPnP is in devices called digital media centers. "When you connect a device to a network, it automatically gets an (network) address and announces itself to the network, 'I'm here and here's what I'm capable of doing,'" said Toby Nixon, who works for Microsoft Corp. and chairs the UPnP Forum steering committee that is pushing the technology. The hot growth area is the custom market, which serves consumers who need help setting up a new Plasma TV and accoutrements. The overall custom-installation industry is growing about 13 percent a year, despite the price declines of TVs and other electronics, according to market researcher Parks Associates in Dallas. The custom market is moving to a network system to simplify the digital home, said Bob Gartland, president of AVAD LLC, the largest distributor of products to the custom-installation market. To get a Nevo SL, consumers must find a local installer to set up the system in the home (details at mynevo.com).
