Canada pulls ADD drug Adderall from market; FDA won't follow suit

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Canadian health authorities have banned the sale of Adderall XR, a stimulant used in the treatment of attention deficit disorder, because of a reported link between the drug and some 20 sudden deaths. The FDA says that it will not ban the drug, as it believes the link between Adderall and the deaths is unproven. The FDA did recommend that Adderall not be used in individuals with heart problems.

Drug safety officials in the U.S. will not follow Canada's lead in banning the sale of a attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drug after reports linked Adderall XR, made by Shire Pharmaceuticals Group Plc, to 20 sudden deaths. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the cases are not convincing evidence the drug is clearly responsible for these deaths. The drug will remain on the market in the U.S and the FDA indicated it would closely monitor adverse-event reports. About 2 million children in the U.S. have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. As a precaution, the FDA today recommended that Adderall products not be used in children or adults with heart problems. Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant (amphetamine). Adderall is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children 6 years of age and older and in adults. "The rare occurrence of sudden death during stimulant therapy of ADHD deserves continued evaluation," said the FDA in an advisory for health professionals.
