Internet access on cell phones can cause problems for some parents

Just as parents are finally finding effective ways to monitor how their kids use the internet at home, now they have a new problem: internet-ready cell phones. Even parenting experts say they do not have a lot of tips for how to know exactly what kids are doing while using the internet on cell phones. They say, as with anything else, a healthy and honest relationship with kids is the key to protecting them while they're online.

Home computers aren't the only gadgets parents should understand.
A lot of parents get their teens cell phones, mainly for safety and convenience.
But new technology for cell phones could mean your kids are getting a lot more than phone calls.
What They might not understand, and kids do, is that many cell phones now have internet access.
Jim Delverne of Gateway Defender says, "It's a natural progression in the technology.
It's bringing the connectivity or the internet to the person from a mobile standpoint."
Things like putting the computer in a room everyone uses, blocking inappropriate content with filters and checking the sites being viewed don't work when it comes to cell phones and internet access.
"The problem is oftentimes the kids know more than parents do If your kid's pretty bright, they can often hack around that."
Tools for cell phones are not as available.

Many kids know how to operate technology better than parents and it's a deficit parents need to correct, say experts.
There are advantages to the new technology but along with the advantages are inherent threats with the new technology as well.
And people need to understand that before they hand a cell phone to a kid that does have the ability to get internet access.

Screens for cell phones are tiny, say experts, which makes actually seeing anything difficult.
Another aspect that experts say will keep parents informed: you have to pay extra with most services to get internet access.
