Cod liver oil shown to protect against arthritis
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
The good news about natural supplements keeps pouring in. Recent
findings on cod liver oil supplements shows that this oil, rich in
omega-3 fatty acids, protects against arthritis and actually prevents
the breakdown of cartilage in knee joints. Cod liver oil is not only
rich in omega-3 oils, it also contains high levels of Vitamin D -- a
vitamin severely lacking in the diets of most people in industrialized
countries due primarily to lack of natural sunlight. Vitamin D
deficiency results in prostate cancer, loss of bone mass, and
sensitivity to sunlight, among other disorders. By taking cod liver
oil supplements, people intake an abundant supply of Vitamin D,
regardless of whether they get sufficient sunlight (there are many other
reasons to seek natural sunlight, however, since phototherapy and light
therapy both have significant health benefits just now being
recognized).
The only real concern about cod liver oil has been the
contamination of oil sources (the fish) with PCBs and heavy metals. This
concern is a legitimate one, and lab tests have shown some supplements
to contain rather alarming levels of these toxic contaminants. Without
knowing which supplements to trust, some people hesitate on taking the
cod liver oil they probably need. The solution? Do what I do: take cod
liver oil supplements along with superfood supplements containing large
amounts of chlorophyll. Chlorella and spirulina are two of my favorites.
Chlorophyll protects the body from toxic metals and helps speed them out
of the system (chlorophyll is widely known as a blood cleanser and liver
detoxifier). By taking cod liver oil together with chlorella, you get
the best of both worlds: omega-3 oils, Vitamin D, plus all the health
benefits of chlorella.
Yet another medical triumph for cod liver oil was announced yesterday
(accompanied by the rather forward claim that the later life of the
Queen Mother would have been quite different, had she only imbibed a
daily spoonful as a girl).
The estimated direct cost of arthritis to the health and social
services is approximately 5.5bn a year.
Cod liver oil has bags of vitamin D, and even more vitamin A - more of
the latter per unit weight than any other common food, more than three
times as much, for example, as the next richest source, beef liver - and
it is also a huge source of omega-3 fatty acids.
