New science shows that many people should avoid eating grains

The science is finally starting to emerge on the negative health consequences of eating grains. Long thought to be a healthy source of calories, grains are largely consumed in their refined, nutrient-stripped form in the American diet. Of course, the U.S. Department of Agriculture continues to push grains by giving them prominent position at the top of the so-called Food Pyramid (which is, ultimately, the promotional goal of the USDA in the first place), but real people concerned with maintaining a healthy digestive system and body weight are learning to avoid grains outright.

Grains are associated with high-carb foods: breads, cereals, rice, pasta and many others. And as tens of millions of followers of the Atkins diet are learning, the only way for many people to lose weight is to simply stop eating grains. The South Beach Diet, for all its popularity, is also largely based on the idea of avoiding grains.

The bottom line: grains (especially refined grains like most people eat) really aren't good for most people. They cause obesity, excess release of fat-promoting insulin, and digestive problems.
