(NaturalNews) As economic opportunities worsen in the United States, especially for disillusioned young people and minorities, violence has increasingly become their go-to option as a means of venting their frustrations.

At the same time, a large swath of American society appears to be condoning such violent behavior by either laughing it off or dismissing it as something that happens to "other people," never realizing that they could become the next victims.

In recent weeks, there have been a number of attacks on innocents by "swarming" groups of mostly teenaged assailants. In Memphis, for instance, a group of more than 100 teens descended upon a shopping plaza, picking out random customers and employees at a Kroger's grocery store to attack.

As reported by CBS affiliate THV11:

A video of the incident has been shared with local news stations in the area and is quickly going viral. It shows a young adult lying still on the ground as others repeatedly kick him and stomp his head. Other are seen being chased or knocked to the ground.

'Sickening' - Mob attacked with pumpkins

There did not appear to be any racial motivation for the attack, as two of three victims hurt the worst were black, while one was white.

In reporting the incident, the New York Daily News described a video of the attack as "sickening," while noting that only one of the dozens of assailants has been identified and arrested. Police did not identify him, however, because he is underage.

"It is extremely troubling to see how many young people were involved, especially on the heels of last week's youth forum," Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said in a statement following the attacks.

"A lot of our citizens are working to provide safe and productive alternatives for our youth. For those that choose not to take advantage of these opportunities, we will work tirelessly to identify, locate and hold you accountable," he added.

A number of patrons and employees were beaten; some of the assailants pummeled people with pumpkins.

One woman who videoed the carnage on her cell phone described the assailants as "hood rats," according to TheBlaze.com. Another man who witnessed the attacks said, "For no reason? That's why people are carrying guns," the site reported.

Earlier this summer, Chicago police made a series of arrests following a number of mob attacks around the city during the Fourth of July celebration. One of those arrested was a 15-year-old youth who punched and kicked at cops as they tried to arrest him.

As CBS Chicago reported:

Among the victims was college student Brandon Trebbien, who was beaten and hit in the face by a group of juveniles near Dearborn and Huron streets just after 11 p.m. Wednesday night. Trebbien was leaving the city's July 4th fireworks show at Navy Pier, which had just ended a short time before the attack.

'I was concerned about my kids'

In March, a man, a woman and their five children were attacked on a one-way street in Louisville, Kentucky, by a mob of between 50 and 100 teens, reported local Fox affiliate WDRB.

"This is like something out of a movie. I've never seen anything like this before," said Viola Loeffler, who was nearly knocked unconscious by an attacker and had to have stitches.

The worst part, she said, was concern about the five kids in the car, some of whom were struck by rocks thrown at them by the mob, and one of whom had lingering psychological problems after the incident.

Such incidents often provoke laughter and/or denial from some of the same people who, in a preparedness situation, most likely themselves would be unable to cope. And as American society continues to deteriorate -- due to worsening economic conditions, chaos along the southwest border, unrest in the cities, political uncertainty and diminishing job prospects -- such crisis scenarios become more and more likely.

Then, mobs will proliferate as police protection is stretched to the limit. Perhaps then such attacks won't be as funny or as tolerated.
