Beware of Pfizer's tetracycline - Unless you enjoy permanently stained teeth

(NaturalNews) A popular class of antibiotic drugs that is still widely administered to young children, tetracycline, which were originally created and patented by drug giant Pfizer Inc., are known to cause permanent staining of teeth in many of the patients that take it. And one North Carolina man who is a victim of tetracycline has created a petition to Pfizer that he hopes will convince the company to pay for the damage the drug caused him.

Pfizer denies responsibility for permanently damaging people's teeth

In response to Surgeon's petition, Joan Campion, a spokeswoman from Pfizer, admitted that permanent tooth damage is a side effect of tetracycline. But in typical drug company fashion, she denied that Pfizer is at all responsible for Surgeon's use of tetracycline, and blamed any damage he incurred on the prescribing physicians who instructed Surgeon's parents to give him the drug as a child.

"Because tetracycline can cross the placenta, it may stain primary teeth if taken during pregnancy," says the book Oral Pathology: Clinical Pathologic Correlations by Regezi. "If it is administered (to children) between birth and age six or seven years, permanent teeth may be affected."

Tetracycline is also one of the many antibiotic drugs commonly given to conventional livestock and poultry to make them grow faster. According to The Atlantic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to allow the use of tetracycline in commercial agriculture, even though its persistent use is leading to the rapid emergence of antibiotic-resistant superbugs.(http://www.theatlantic.com)
