Goulette said he has been forced to carry a fingerprint card to prove who he is and trying to clear his record.
Goulette, a 38-year-old nurse and personal trainer, has a false criminal record listed under his name, that he said was created by his brother, Arthur Goulette.
"Nobody wants to help me clear this up," he said.
Late last year, Goulette moved from Florida to Seymour hoping to return to his Connecticut roots with his wife and three children.
In May, after he submitted an application to join Great Hill Hose Fire Company as a volunteer he received a notice that a routine background check had produced some questionable results.
The background check showed a lengthy criminal file on an Emilio Goulette, a variation on Emile Goulette's name, and carrying his date of birth.
The background check shows that "Emilio Goulette" was charged with third-degree assault, interfering with an arrest, failure to appear and probation violations, from a January 1999 arrest in Milford, when Emile Goulette said he was living in Florida.
Emile Goulette said those arrests involved his younger brother, Arthur, who he said has been in and out of jail his entire life.
"He's a lifelong career criminal," Emile Goulette said of Arthur.
Arthur Goulette is in a North Carolina prison for a bank robbery, according to the North Carolina Department of Corrections Web site.
Officials there recently warned Emile Goulette that his brother had his Social Security number.
Gene Redmond, supervising identification technician at the state police Bureau of Identification, said he did not know of any way to clear Emile Goulette's name.
"It' such a hassle for these people, that all we can give them is this card showing them these fingerprints aren't identical.
