Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), the chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government (House WFG Subcommmittee), disclosed this in a thread on the X platform. His committee had reportedly discovered this censorship effort following the release of emails subpoenaed by the House Judiciary Committee (HJC), which Jordan also chairs.
"Never-before-released internal emails subpoenaed by [the HJC] reveal that the Biden White House pressured Amazon to censor books that expressed views the White House did not approve of," wrote Jordan. He also disclosed that former White House Senior Advisor to the COVID-19 Response Andy Slavitt was the one responsible for the censorship effort. Slavitt stepped down from the advisory role in June 2021.
According to the congressman, the senior advisor sent an email on March 2, 2021 about the matter. Jordan recounted: "[Slavitt] fired off an email demanding to know who he and his White House colleagues could talk to at the company about 'the high levels of propaganda, mis- and disinformation [on] Amazon.'"
In order to weed out books it considered "propaganda and misinformation," the White House reportedly "ran keyword searchers for controversial topics, such as 'vaccine.'" It emailed Amazon when it didn't like how the search results appeared.
According to Jordan, Amazon was initially apprehensive of the "manual intervention" to censor books. He continued: "Why? Not out of any commitment to free speech – but because doing so would be 'too visible' to the American public, and likely to spur criticism from conservative media."
The e-commerce giant met with officials from the Biden administration on March 9, 2021 – a week after Slavitt sent his email – to find out whether they should remove the books entirely or just bury them in the search results. On that same day, Amazon enabled "Do Not Promote" (DNP) for books that expressed the view that vaccines were not effective. Moreover, the tech giant also considered other ways "to reduce the visibility" of certain books that the Biden White House disliked. "As a reminder, we did enable DNP for [anti-vaccine] books whose primary purpose is to persuade readers [that] vaccines are unsafe or ineffective on [March 9]," said an email between company employees. "[We] will review additional handling options for these books."
"That's right; Amazon caved to the pressure from the Biden White House to censor speech," said Jordan. He reiterated that the two committees he chairs – the HJC and the House WFG Subcommittee under it – will investigate the alleged censorship effort.
One book critical of the COVID-19 injections that Amazon censored was titled "Anyone Who Tells You Vaccines Are Safe and Effective Is Lying." The British doctor, who self-published the book, "used to debate vaccination on TV and radio – but won every public debate." Because of this, "vaccine supporters will no longer debate with him."
"Coleman had separately condemned COVID-19 vaccines as a dangerous medical experiment," said the Daily Signal. "[He has also] claimed doctors who administer them are guilty of war crimes."
Meanwhile, Slavitt gained notoriety when his name was included in the so-called Twitter Files. According to the documents, he allegedly pressured social media companies into suppressing opposition to the COVID-19 vaccines.
This led to the HJC issuing a subpoena to Slavitt on Nov. 30, 2023. The committee reportedly obtained documents attesting to his role "in communicating the Biden White House's censorship efforts to social media companies – including the White House's demands to censor true information, memes, satire and other constitutionally protected forms of expression." However, the White House instructed Slavitt not to appear before Congress.
