Campus police officer shoots, kills 23-year-old honor student after traffic violation

by Mike Bundrant

(NaturalNews) Robert Cameron Redus was a well-liked, 23-year-old college student whose life ended in tragedy early Friday morning. Redus died at the hands of an armed campus cop by the name of corporal Christopher Carter.

According to San Antonio local KSAT News, Carter emptied his gun into Redus after pulling him over for speeding, a routine traffic violation.

Redus was unarmed. According to his friends, the few sarcastic comments that Redus made after being pulled over were enough for Carter to justify murder.

The officer allegedly labeled these comments as "resistance" and began firing.

Friends of Redus are shocked, describing him as "kind, intelligent, compassionate and well-loved within the community." No one had anything derogatory to say about Redus, who was on the dean's list at University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), on of the southwest's top rated liberal arts schools.

"He was not an aggressive person at all, so the story doesn't make sense," one student said.

Alamo Heights Police Chief Richard Pruit tells a far different story. According to him, officer Carter confronted Redus in an apartment complex parking lot after following the erratic driver for some time.

Once confronted, Pruit reports that Redus became belligerent, resisted arrest, attacked Carter with the officer's own baton and was warned multiple times before being fired on. Redus was allegedly charging at Carter with his fists raised when he received the five fatal shots.

Officer Carter allegedly received injuries to his head (although he received no medical treatment) from the resistance offered by Redus.

The campus cop has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Redus' family disputes the official story, asserting it would have been completely out of character for Redus to act in the manner depicted by authorities.

UIW seems to be taking Carter's side. Their official statement claims that Carter has '"an extensive background in law enforcement."

Investigation by the San Antonio Express News, however, reveals that Carter has been working for UIW for a relatively short period of time and has a sordid history in law enforcement. Carter has held eight law enforcement jobs in nine years.

This is a story that will unfold over time, as many questions loom. Perhaps the best question is related to how an officer of the law could justify use of deadly force when no life was being threatened.

Mohammad Haidarasl, who witnessed the killing, said that Redus' last words sounded surprised.

"Oh, you're gonna shoot me?"

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the survivors of 23-year-old Robert Cameron Redus.
