The idea of adding fluoride to drinking water is decades old - Windsor, Ontario, Canada decides to end that now

(NaturalNews) Despite strong opinions on both sides, Windsor, a city in Ontario, Canada, joins other municipalities, namely Lakeshore, Tecumseh, Amherstburg, Calgary and Waterloo, to end fluoridation, according to a Jan 28, 2013 report by Doug Schmidt in The Windsor Star.

While opinions from health and dental experts, and others with various scientific backgrounds were challenged by a list of experts, studies and reports brought on by opponents, it was evident that just as many Windsorites were celebrating as were concerned.

Journalist and councilor of Ward 4 Alan Halberstadt, with a drive to clean up the city, argues on behalf of pregnant women, reportedly stating that they need to be advised of potential harm that could result in preparing infant formula with tap water containing hydrofluorosilicic acid. He described the city's approach to medicating against tooth decay as "paternalistic."

President of the Ontario Dental Association and Chatham dentist, Dr. Arthur Worth, argues that low-income residents and those who lack dental insurance benefit from fluoridation and calls it a "cost-effective preventative strategy." In practice, Worth finds that patients from near-by fluoride-free cities often have softer teeth and more cavities.

Another dentist, Dr. Hardy Limeback, discusses the "yucky origin of fluoride" stating that it comes from the scrubbers of smokestacks at fertilizer factories. After studying the effects of fluoride as head of preventative dentistry at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto, and serving on the U.S. National Academy of Sciences subcommittee on fluoride, Limeback retired from academia early, and apologized to students and his faculty for misleading them unintentionally.

Stating that "industrial waste was being used to fluoridate the drinking water. The chemicals used in over 90 per cent of cities in North America are fluorosilicates: they are contaminated with cancer-causing arsenic and radioactive particles and have never been tested for safety in humans." Dr. Hardy Limeback believes others support fluoridation "to save face."

What are the potential ill effects of ingesting fluoride?

Bones become brittle, studies suggest, as fluoride accumulates over time, which in turn increases the risk of hip fractures and other bone issues. While more studies are recommended, to add to the list of potential issues, studies suggest lower IQ being of concern, issues with thyroid and pineal glands, as well as increased risk of bone cancer.

Keeping teeth healthy

Fluoride, to some, is still an important component to keeping teeth healthy, but they suggest it's effect is topical, not through ingestion. Also, as Tera Warner of TeraWarner.com points out, "your entire approach to caring for them will change when you realize that your gums and your teeth ARE alive."

Essential oils of rose, clove, cinnamon, oregano and more are said to be anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial. When applied to dental floss, it can heal or protect the gums, roots and teeth in a much different way than with standard brushing and flossing. Vitamin D is also said to play a major role in healthy teeth and gums.
