Did you know? Acai berries actually come from palm trees

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

(NaturalNews) Acai berries have become so famous in recent years as an antioxidant-packed superfood, that even many people who don't keep actively informed on health food topics have heard of them. Given the name, you might imagine that they grow on bushes like blueberries or raspberries -- but in fact, they grow on palm trees.

Acai palms are native to Brazil and are also a major source for heart of palm. The fruit of the Acai tree has long been a staple in the diet of poor, rural Brazilians because of its abundance and its high nutritional content.

Unfortunately, the popularity of acai's nutritional benefits led to a wave of charlatans and hucksters selling adulterated (or even counterfeit) acai products online. Mainstream media websites including the LA Times widely promoted the fraudulent acai scams by carrying their advertising, receiving revenues from the fraudulent marketing of adulterated acai for weight loss. NaturalNews helped expose this fraud in an article published on February 20, 2011, entitled "Mainstream media websites promoting Acai Berry Diet weight loss scam with weird belly fat tips ads." http://www.naturalnews.com/031280_acai_berri...

In January of 2012, the FTC finally took action against the fraudulent acai promoters. As NaturalNews reported: (http://www.naturalnews.com/034598_acai_FTC_l...)

...the FTC has asked federal courts in ten separate cases to stop the companies involved from creating fake acai berry diet ads that pose as legitimate product reviews, but are really nothing more than fabricated marketing schemes. These deceptive ads continue to appear all across the internet on various websites, including many mainstream news websites.
