Shine a little light on diabetes during Diabetes Awareness Month

by Paul Fassa

(NaturalNews)November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Many of us have pre-diabetic conditions and don't know it. Diabetes type 2 can set the stage for coronary problems and full blown diabetes, leading to insulin shots and potential amputations. It can all be avoided with the right knowledge and lifestyle changes.

What diabetes type 2 is - simplified

It used to be called adult onset diabetes. But it began to afflict teenagers and even younger kids. So now it's called diabetes type 2 or diabetes 2. Biochemically, the precursor of diabetes 2 is insulin resistance (IR), or metabolic syndrome.

It's not necessarily a lack of insulin, but an inability of insulin to convert glucose into energy for muscles and other cells. The glycemic index shows how different foods affect blood sugar. Consuming lots of high glycemic foods creates sudden blood sugar spikes, causing the pancreas to pump out more insulin for converting that sugar into energy.

With nowhere to go, the insulin stacks up and the excess glucose goes into fat cells for storage, and the fats begin to get fatter. Cutting back on fat is not necessarily what will prevent metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance.

The standard American diet (SAD) most of us have been born into relies on lots of refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup in most processed foods and drinks. Then there's all that bread, pizza crust, refined pasta, and pastries that are made with bleached white flour.

All of these refined carbohydrates or simple carbs dump glucose into the blood too quickly for the pancreas to pump insulin and keep up with the glucose overloads. But artificial sweeteners cause another set of neurological problems and also lead to obesity anyway.

And if you don't exercise at all, the muscles don't demand glucose for energy because they don't need it. So all that high glycemic food and drink demands more insulin, but the insulin has nowhere to go but into those fat cells.

We weren't designed to consume vast quantities of simple (processed) carbohydrates. This type of diet started only a century ago and really spiked over the last few decades. A healthy diet of organic vegetables and complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains, and good fats without all that sugar and high fructose corn syrup (aka corn syrup) is step one.

Step two is exercise. Making your muscles crave the glucose in your blood and demand its conversion to energy with the insulin that's available can help reduce IR. If nothing is done to rid IR or metabolic syndrome, diabetes type 2 takes over. The pancreas just cannot keep up with the demand for insulin anymore.

Shining a big light on diabetes

Perusing small articles with different suggestions, many bent on selling their supplements for what minerals you need to handle the deficiencies described, can put you into a maze of complexity and confusion.

So here's a suggestion, completely unsolicited and unremunerated, for getting the information you need to prevent or reverse diabetes without getting confused. Go to the link below and read more about Mike Adam's latest version of his comprehensive bookHow to Halt Diabetes in 25 Days. http://www.truthpublishing.com/haltdiabetes_...

Mike walked the walk to reverse his own borderline diabetes before becoming the Health Ranger.
