Support efforts to block GM potato plantings by signing petition

by Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) Last week, NaturalNews covered the ongoing battle being waged by Greenpeace activists in Sweden against the illicit planting of BASF's genetically-modified (GM) potato, Amflora, which was deceitfully approved in the country based on shoddy studies (http://www.naturalnews.com/032544_BASF_GM_po...). After being arrested and released twice, the "human shield" is once again back at the warehouse where it still plans to stop the plantings -- and these tireless defenders of food integrity need your help to ensure that the "Frankenpotatoes" never make it into the ground.

Current European Union (EU) law forbids the planting of Amflora because it contains a genetic resistance to antibiotics, which experts agree is a threat to the already problematic rise in antibiotic-resistant "superbugs." And while the Swedish government admits that the safety studies used to approve Amflora were inadequate, it is doing nothing to stop plantings of the GM crop in the country's northern crop fields.

Part of the problem is that many Swedes have no idea that Amflora was approved on such flimsy grounds, or that it is even being planted. A community information session recently organized by Greenpeace to highlight the facts surrounding Amflora and its approval was met with shock and awe by many locals who simply were unaware that the GM potato had been approved without any sort of legitimate safety studies.

And that seems to be the order of the day when it comes to GMOs. Most people either do not know they are in the food supply, or if they do know, they assume that they must be safe. The reality, however, is that not a single GMO has ever been proven safe using a credible, independent safety assessment. Virtually all "safety" studies involving GMOs have been conducted by the same companies that created them in the first place, which shatters any possibility of objectivity.

If Amflora is allowed to be planted in Sweden in violation of EU law, and without the backing of legitimate, scientific safety studies, the biotechnology industry will gain even more ground in its quest to control the food supply. But if we band together and unitedly tell the Swedish government to do the right thing and stop the plantings, it will represent an advancement towards eventually blocking all GMO plantings.
