Nuclear reactor meltdown narrowly averted at the Fukushima power plant near Tokyo

(NaturalNews) Media reports are now saying that the possible nuclear plant meltdown at the Fukushima power plant in Japan has been narrowly averted. CSMonitor.com is reporting that the core containment structure holding the plant's fuel rods was not damaged in the explosion that took place there yesterday (http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Asia-Pacific/...). This statement, however, conflicts with other news reports that claim the core was "partially damaged" and some radiation had begun to leak (http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/03/12/...).
Here at NaturalNews, we await final word that will hopefully confirm the meltdown is no longer a possibility. Even if the meltdown has been averted (which still remains to be confirmed), the Fukushima incident already ranks as the third worst nuclear power plant accident in the history of human civilization. The other two, of course, are the Three Mile Island incident in the United States in 1979, and the far worse Chernobyl meltdown in present-day Ukraine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disas...).
That Japan could even be faced with the very real possibility of a total nuclear plant containment meltdown is a horrifying thought, as it could have unleashed a deadly radioactive cloud that potentially could have killed or harmed tens of millions of Japanese citizens. It also would have rendered a huge portion of Japan's coast line uninhabitable for hundreds of years while simultaneously destroying a very large percentage of Japan's power capacity that feeds Tokyo and surrounding cities.
This near-disaster is a stark reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness for people everywhere.
