Combat scalp irritations and promote healthy hair

by Fleur Hupston

(NaturalNews) People all over the world spend thousands of dollars attempting to solve scalp irritations, sores and itching. The causes of this problem vary considerably, yet natural treatments can help. This article will examine some causes of itchy scalp and ways of combating the problem.

Causes of Itchy Scalp and Irritation

Possible causes of itchy scalp include sunburn, head lice, eczema, poor hair care and/or adverse reaction to hair products such as shampoo, perm and dye chemicals.

If itchy bumps and sores appear regularly on the scalp, eliminate toxic, detergent-type hair care products as a first step in treating the problem. Opt instead for a good quality, completely natural and organic shampoo and rinse with clean water with lemon or a witch hazel solution to allow the scalp to heal.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is said to sooth and calm itching and may help to heal any breaks in the scalp due to scratching. A witch hazel solution made of equal parts of witch hazel and distilled water provides a gentle rinsing solution.

Tea Tree Oil as a Hair Treatment

Known for its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-septic properties, tea tree oil is effective in eliminating dandruff and scalp itchiness. Look for a natural shampoo which contains the oil or add a few drops to your regular natural shampoo. As a hair treatment, mix a few drops of tea tree oil with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil. Massage into the scalp and leave for a half an hour. Shampoo and rinse as usual.

Stinging Nettle for Scalp and Hair

Nettle is a herb that can be taken as a tea to promote healthy hair growth. The tea is easily made by pouring 4 cups of boiling water over a cup of fresh nettle tips. Allow to steep for 10 - 15 minutes and then strain. Cooled nettle tea is also useful to pour directly onto the scalp as a rinse.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary is said to stimulate hair follicles and help to slow down hair loss. It is also useful for dry, flaky scalps. Massage the scalp with a few drops of rosemary oil blended with coconut oil to provide a nourishing and soothing treatment for the scalp. A tablespoon of dried rosemary can also be added to your regular natural shampoo.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera gel can be used as a shampoo on its own, as it acts as a natural cleanser. Aloe vera gel is known for its anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. Rub some of the gel into the scalp, lather and rinse off to counter dry, itchy scalp.
