Doctor sentenced to three-month suspension over death of asthma patient
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
A general practitioner in Scotland was found guilty of serious professional misconduct and suspended for three months after a panel determined that she did not provide adequate care to an eight-year-old boy who later died of an acute asthma attack.
- Dr Mallon had not given the standard of care that the public is entitled to expect meaning action had to be taken against her registration, the GMC said.
- Owen's mother Michelle Hynes, 38, took him into the Central Health Centre, Cumbernauld, Glasgow, on August 19, 2002.
- He was experiencing breathing problems and had already spent three days in hospital for his asthma earlier that month.
- Dr Mallon said during the hearing that Owen hadn't appeared unwell when she first saw him.
- She spoke to him about his first day back at school and the new Scooby Doo film, she said.
- Owen was then nebulised (given drugs via an inhaler) and sent home but his condition worsened and he returned to the surgery later that day.
- Eventually he was rushed to hospital but died shortly after arriving.
- Dr Mallon was cleared of acting inappropriately by not having the eight-year-old immediately admitted to hospital and of lying to a fatal accident inquiry in Scotland about re-examining after nebulisation.
- The panel however said a reprimand "would not adequately preserve public trust in the profession or sufficiently register its disapproval of your conduct" and that conditions were also inappropriate to the case.
