A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals that a "slow-carb" diet focused on low-glycemic index foods is far more effective than a traditional low-carb, low-fat and low-calorie diet in losing weight and preventing heart disease. "Slow-carb" dieters were told to eat carbohydrates at every meal, eat until they were full and snack when they were hungry. After 12 months of the small study conducted by David S. Ludwig at Children's Hospital in Boston, the "slow-carb" diet group lost 7.8 percent of their body weight, compared to the 6.1 percent lost by the traditional diet group. The "slow-carb" dieters also lowered their triglycerides by 37 percent and lowered their chance of blood clots by 39 percent, while the traditional dieters only lowered their triglycerides by 19 percent and actually increased their chance of blood clots by 33 percent.
