Indian health minister calls for more emphasis on homoeopathic and ayurvedic medicine

Mulayam Singh Yadav, the chief minister of India's health department, has created an advisory council to encourage homeopathic and traditional (ayurvedic) Indian medicines. The council will be composed of Indian and foreign doctors of high reputation. Minister Yadav says that he will seek Cabinet approval for the council.

Yadav says that the homeopathic and ayurvedic medical systems could become very popular among poorer Indians because they are low in cost and have no side effects. He called on Indians to adapt simpler lifestyles so as to forestall diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure, and said that India should originate research work on homeopathic medicine.

The council will have renowned doctors of Indian and foreign origin. The CM has directed the officers of the medicine and education department to put up a proposal in this connection very soon. He has also assured that Cabinet approval will be sought for the same before he visits Patna for the Samajwadi Party's Rashtriya Sammelan. He said demand for homeopathic doctors would be seriously considered and research work in homeopathy would also be encouraged. Underlining the need for encouraging homeopathy and ayurvedic medicine system, he said the two had the potential of becoming very popular amongst the poor on account of their low cost and no side-effects. He assured that the recommendations given by the proposed advisory council would be fully implemented. The CM made these observations while inaugurating the newly-constructed teaching and residential buildings as also a men's hostel of the National Homeopathic Medical College and hospital at Gomtinagar. Referring to the challenges posed by dreaded diseases such as cancer, diabetes and blood pressure --- he said China and India would suffer the most from them. He called upon people to follow a simple lifestyle so as to stall these ailments.
