Premature births may be linked to oral health problems, new study says

A team of New York dentists says pregnant women with high amounts of the bacteria that cause tooth decay are more likely to have premature births. This is the latest in a growing amount of research showing a possible connection between oral health problems and premature births. Researchers are not sure of the reasons for the connection, but one expert guesses the bacteria that cause oral problems travel to the uterus during pregnancy.

- Their study of nearly 300 women found a significant association between high levels of an oral bacterium, Actinomyces naeslundii genospecies 2 -- associated with tooth decay -- and risk of delivering preterm low birth weight babies.

- Once in the uterus, the bacteria, along with molecules called proinflammatory mediators (released by the body in response to the bacteria), could lead to uterine contractions and cervical dilation.
- She speculated that when the cervix is dilated, more bacteria enter -- eventually causing the uterine membranes to rupture, resulting in preterm birth.
