A new study published in Britain promises to add even more fuel to the fight against smoking in public. Researchers say that second-hand smoke kills about 30 people each day in England. Two of those people, the study says, die because they have been exposed to second-hand smoke on the job. "These shocking figures show, yet again, the need for a new law to end smoking in all places," a British activist said.
- Thirty people die in Britain every day from passive smoking at home and at work, estimates published yesterday suggest.
- Up to two people die a day because of exposure to smoke at work.
- At least one person a week who dies from passive smoking has worked in the hospitality industry, says Konrad Jamrozick, professor of evidence-based medicine at the University of Queensland, Australia.
- Writing in the British Medical Journal online, he says that 617 deaths a year are related to exposure to smokers at work.
- Deborah Arnott, the director of Ash (Action on Smoking and Health), said: "These shocking figures show yet again the urgent need for a new law to end smoking in all workplaces."
