Early Ritalin use could lead to depression in adulthood

Children who take the drug Ritalin may be at greater risk for depression when they become adults. The medication is given to children believed to be hyperactive—but the diagnosis can often be wrong. Misdiagnosis, combined with Ritalin use, can lead to clinical depression in adulthood, according to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health and McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Three to 12 percent of children suffer from hyperactivity, or attention deficit disorder.
