Chronic back pain results in loss of brain mass, research reveals

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The Journal of Neuroscience released a report stating that untreated back pain may lead to irreversible brain tissue loss, as much as 5% to 11%. This tissue loss was measured in patients suffering from chronic back pain and monitored with the use of an MRI scan. Chronic pain sufferers' results showed that their brains were aging ten to twenty years faster than normal, and shrinking at an alarming rate.

This may explain previous studies which demonstrated a link between chronic back pain and emotional decision making impairment. It was hoped that these changes in the brain would reverse, but the results seem to point to the fact that if chronic pain is left untreated, brain tissue loss is permanent.
